General Anesthesia causes
pose an Alzheimer’s Risk?
Relationship between
general anesthesia and Alzheimer’s disease: anesthesia during the course of
surgery does not increase the likelihood of developing lasting dementia.
I searched the MEDLINE,
Embase and Google Scholar databases for peer-reviewed reporting the Most
recently research has suggested that in addition to targeting specific areas
involved in sleep and arousal general anesthesia works by knocking out the
neural networks that enable communication between brain regions. Molecular
pathway by which halothane induces structural alterations of the amyloid beta
peptide resulting in oligomerization, a risk factor for AD this interaction of
inhaled anesthetics. The number of anaesthetics received and the development of
AD, but duration of anaesthesia that is critical for the onset of AD, not the
number of anaesthetics.
Recent experiments on
animals and human cells show that anesthesia can increase the buildup of the
proteins thought to underlie Alzheimer’s disease, especially in high doses.
I read a recent article “Alzheimer Patient increasing problems with her
memory”. Elderly patients after surgery exhibit a condition called
postoperative cognitive decline in which they experience lapses in memory and attention,
but it usually does not last for more than a few weeks.
